-- Hu Yaobang resigns from his post as general secretary of the CPC Central Committee. Zhao Ziyang is elected acting general secretary.
-- Deng Xiaoping reaffirms that after things are settled according to the policy of "one country, two systems". Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan will be allowed to keep their present systems for at least 50 years.
