BEIJING - Construction of Beijing's first bicycle-only road will begin in September, and the project is expected to be completed by 2019, as one of the city's efforts to promote green transit, the Municipal Commission of Transport said Friday.
The 6.5-km road will be built between Huilongguan and Shangdi with a designed speed of 20 km per hour. It will have eight pairs of entries and exits for cyclists only.
The road will not have traffic lights and e-bikes will not be allowed for safety reasons, according to the commission.
Beijing currently has over 1.9 million shared bikes, and over 1,014 kilometers of lanes for cyclists and pedestrians. By 2020, the figure will reach 3,200 km, according to the commission.
