Economic risk, vaccines on agenda as Xi chairs committee meeting

The Communist Party of China Central Committee on Thursday stressed the importance of implementing reforms in order to bring about high-quality development.

Leadership should be strengthened to ensure good coordination in deepening reforms with a focus on solving practical problems during the process, according to a statement released after a meeting of the Committee for Deepening Overall Reform of the CPC Central Committee, chaired by General Secretary Xi Jinping, who is president, and also director of the committee.

The meeting reviewed and adopted an array of documents focused on deepening reforms in such fields as advancing high-quality development, establishing new mechanisms for more efficient coordinated regional development, improving oversight of key financial institutions, and supporting free-trade pilot areas to spur innovation.

Promoting high-quality development is a fundamental requirement for the country in formulating development strategies and rolling out economic policies, the statement said.

Efforts should be stepped up to set up systems regarding high-quality development to cover such areas as indicators, standards, policies and performance assessment mechanisms, the statement added.

The meeting highlighted the urgent need to formulate policies in key areas such as manufacturing, high technology, services and infrastructure, with priority given to safeguarding the public interest, it said.

Party leadership must be strengthened using regional coordination for balanced growth between different areas, it said.

Deeper reforms and opening-up should be carried out in creating a good investment environment, promoting trade facilitation, pushing forward financial innovation to serve the real economy and pioneering new approaches in the area of human resources, it said.

The meeting stressed the need to improve oversight of key financial institutions to mitigate against systematic risks so that the nation's financial systems can operate in a steady and healthy manner.

Vaccines directly affect the health of the population as well as national security, the statement said, and sound measures should be taken to strictly enforce market access rules and strengthen market supervision when reforming and improving the vaccine management system to ensure safety.

Small-scale farmers are encouraged to become involved in modern agriculture, which is significant in promoting village revitalization, the statement highlighted.

The meeting highlighted the Party's leadership over reforms, and said that key officials at various levels should be held responsible for deepening reforms.
