Brazil-China seminar explores effectiveness of nation's governance

"The model of Chinese governance has fully shown its effectiveness in the process of building a moderately prosperous society in all respects," said Evandro Menezes de Carvalho, head of the Center for Brazil-China Studies at the Getulio Vargas Foundation, during an online symposium on Thursday. "The governance of China has distinctive characteristics as it is rooted in domestic reality, as well as the international situation. The Communist Party of China has played a core role in it."

The seminar themed on the governance of China was jointly hosted by the Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies and the Center for Brazil-China Studies at the Getulio Vargas Foundation.

Zhang Weiwei, director of Fudan University's China Institute, stressed that China has embarked on a correct path suited to its national conditions because of its governance model, which could be analyzed in political, economic and social aspects.

Politically, Zhang said, the Communist Party of China represents the collective interests of the country and Chinese officials are elected through both selection and election.

Economically, China established a socialist market economy in which both State-owned enterprises and private enterprises operate smoothly and complement each other, making the whole economy active and creative. Besides, China's mid- to long-term planning is strategic and instructive.

Socially, China maintains a high degree of positive interactions with the rest of the world.

In addition, Zhang rounded up his comments with three experiences regarding China's governance model: Seeking truth from facts, learning from other countries while rooted in its reality, and adhering to the people-centered principle.

Yang Wanming, Chinese ambassador to Brazil, said China is committed to the peaceful development of the world, abides by the principle of mutual respect and win-win cooperation, and firmly upholds fairness and justice in international relations.

Others attending the meeting included Zhou Zhiwei, vice-director of the institute's Department of International Relations, Javier Vadell, professor of International Relations, Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais, Brazil, Wang Lei, director of the Center for BRICS Cooperation Studies at Beijing Normal University, and Mariana Burger, doctor of International Relations, Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais.
