Non-CPC party head says health is top priority

As a party with the majority of its members coming from the health and medicine sector, the Chinese Peasant and Workers Democratic Party has made its priority helping to build a healthy China, party chairman He Wei said on Sunday.

Since the 18th CPC National Congress in 2012, China has made great strides in public health, with major health indicators ranking among the top of middle to high-income countries, he said at a news conference.

In the past five years, the major focus of the CPWDP has been weak links in the sector, such as the establishment of the National Healthcare Security Administration and making public health more equitable and accessible, he said.

In the next five years, he added, the party will focus on the aging society and reluctance of young people to give birth, and make more suggestions on elderly care and birth support policies.

Moreover, issues harming the health of Chinese people will also be a top concern of the party, such as major epidemics and chronic disease, he said, adding it will also help people develop healthy lifestyles.
