China's nuclear power to accelerate clean energy initiatives

China General Nuclear Power Corp has accelerated its clean energy initiatives both domestically and internationally throughout 2023, continuously increasing the share of renewable energy in the company's power generation portfolio.

As the main force in China's clean energy development, CGN has been vigorously developing nuclear, wind and solar energies in recent years, with the installed capacity of clean energy in operation and under construction exceeding 100 million kilowatts last year, said the country's largest nuclear operator during a press conference held in Beijing on Wednesday.

In 2023, the company's total installed capacity of clean energy exceeded 100 million kilowatts, and the annual feed-in power reached 333.8 billion kilowatt-hours, an increase of 23.4 billion kilowatt hours from the previous year, it said. This is equivalent to reducing standard coal consumption of 100 million metric tons, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by more than 260 million tons, it said.

The company completed the country's largest onshore wind power base in operation in 2023 and started construction of the country's first large-scale offshore pile-fixed offshore photovoltaic project, it said. CGN has been actively involved with the Belt and Road initiative in recent years, providing clean power to 15 countries and regions participating in the global initiative. Overseas installed capacity of the company rose to 13.63 million kilowatts last year, with annual cumulative on-grid power output reaching 46.28 billion kilowatts hours.

The company has also been stepping up investment in research and development, accelerating the promotion of high-level scientific and technological self-reliance and self-improvement, it said.
