Lenovo eyes 2024 as breakthrough year for AI devices
Lenovo Group Ltd, the world's largest PC maker, is eyeing 2024 as a breakthrough year for its artificial-intelligence-powered devices, as it works to integrate self-developed large language model into a range of devices.
Liu Jun, executive vice-president of Lenovo Group and president of Lenovo China, said in an interview that the company is integrating its self-developed Tianxi AI large language model into devices such as AI PCs, AI smartphones, AI tablets and various AI-powered internet of things equipment.
This strategy will not only reinforce Lenovo's leadership in the PC sector but also foster growth in non-PC intelligent terminals, Liu said.
He highlighted that Lenovo's AI PCs, embedded with a personal large language model featuring 7 billion parameters, lead the industry, significantly enhancing PC applications and simplifying user operations, ultimately serving as a personal AI assistant.
With strong policy support and rising market demand, the scale of the AI industry continues to expand, and technological applications are deepening. China is rapidly developing a unique AI ecosystem, where the integration of AI large language model technology with terminal devices has become a new innovation frontier, experts said.
AI PCs, which integrate AI into their processors and can independently run large language models (LLMs) and applications, signify a major turning point in the PC industry. This innovation is expected to initiate a new product replacement cycle, according to a report by market research firm International Data Corporation.
IDC said China's PC market is projected to maintain steady growth over the next five years, with AI-powered PCs estimated to occupy 85 percent of the market share in China by 2027.
IDC data indicates that global shipments of AI PCs will increase from nearly 50 million units this year to more than 167 million by 2027. By the end of 2027, AI PCs are anticipated to constitute nearly 60 percent of all PC shipments worldwide.
