State Grid Changzhou Power Supply Company completes GIS switchgear transformation project

On Nov 5, the 110-kilovolt Jingzhuang Substation's No 1 main transformer and 110 kv I-section bus bar were operating normally, marking the successful completion of the intelligent transformation of the GIS switchgear at the Jingzhuang Substation in Changzhou, Jiangsu province. GIS, which stands for Gas Insulated Switchgear, has enabled the station to become the second in Jiangsu province and the first in the city of Changzhou to complete the intelligent transformation of GIS switchgear in a substation. The transformation aimed to align with the trend of intelligence and digitization in power equipment.

During the project, staff members installed intelligent modules and fiber optics within the traditional GIS equipment to achieve the intelligent upgrade of the GIS equipment. After the transformation, the total number of internal components in the GIS decreased by one-third, and internal and external wiring was reduced by nearly 90 percent, effectively reducing operational risks associated with wiring. The addition of voltage, current, angular velocity and other sensors enables dynamic monitoring of internal states such as mechanical characteristics, operational movements and motor statuses, leading to further improvements in the reliability of power supply.

The Jingzhuang Substation's 110 kv GIS intelligent switchgear transformation project is the first such project implemented by the State Grid Changzhou Power Supply Company. To ensure its smooth progress, the company organized multiple seminars in its early stages to repeatedly optimize construction plans. Compared to solutions at other pilot units in Jiangsu province, the total construction time for the project was reduced by two days, achieving the shortest equipment outage time and effectively reducing potential risks.

The successful commissioning of the project has shifted the feedback mode of GIS switchgear, disconnectors and other equipment from passive alerts to positive sensing. By transitioning from manual monitoring to real-time monitoring, the project has significantly improved the maintenance efficiency of GIS equipment. As a result, it has also led to a substantial enhancement in the overall operational reliability and intelligent maintenance of the substation, thereby continuously strengthening the power supply capacity of the regional power grid.
