Ningbo unites locals and expats for New Year festivities

As Chinese New Year approaches, residents of Ningbo, Zhejiang province, and their international friends are coming together to celebrate the upcoming festivities with a variety of cultural experiences.

On Jan 12, a scenic area in the city's Xiepu town buzzed with excitement as locals and over 40 foreign visitors from countries such as the United States, Germany, and Indonesia joined in a unique New Year cultural event. The festivities began with a lively dragon dance and the energetic rhythm of boat drums, which are symbols of good luck and prosperity. The foreign guests eagerly participated in drumming and experiencing the distinctive charm of traditional Chinese folk music.

One of the highlights of the event was a Yueju Opera performance. The actresses, dressed in elaborate costumes, delivered a heartfelt performance of a classic Chinese opera, winning applause from the audience. Some even took part, donning traditional costumes and learning the songs.

Another popular segment was the production of traditional rice candies, where people gathered to watch the process.

"The 'bang' sound was like firecrackers, so fun to watch," said 15-year-old Kurosh Rahimi.

Visitors also had the chance to create local intangible cultural heritage items, such as the unique farmers' paintings. Sannia Mareta, an Indonesian teacher at the University of Nottingham Ningbo China, shared the inspiration behind her artwork, which featured Chinese landscapes and a dragon, blending her personal experience with traditional Chinese culture.

"I love the festive atmosphere in the ancient village, writing Spring Festival couplets, eating tangyuan, and dancing with boat drums. It's a wonderful way to experience the warmth and charm of Chinese traditions," said Darya.

This vibrant celebration was a meaningful cultural exchange that allowed all participants to gain a deeper appreciation for Chinese traditions.
