Amicitas transcendat distantiam: Matteo Ricci in Nanchang
"True friends always feel close to each other, no matter the distance between them". 430 years ago, Matteo Ricci arrived in China as a Jesuit missionary from Rome, Italy. Ricci introduced the Western scientific and cultural knowledge he had acquired to China and systematically and profoundly conveyed China's realities to the West, breaking new ground in cultural exchange between China and the West.
Crucially, Ricci's cultural accommodation strategy influenced generations of Western intellectuals and scholars, making them aware of the vast differences between Eastern and Western cultures. This approach encourages humility, appreciation, and pragmatism in learning China's language and culture, fostering exchanges and cooperation grounded in mutual understanding. His ideas remain relevant today and continue to inspire future generations.
2025 marks the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Italy. As the portal of time and space is opened, a tale of cultural exchange unfolds at Nanchang's Wanshou Palace. Scriptwriter Huang Yichuan encounters the time-traveling Matteo Ricci (Dr. Fahad Kabeer), and together they relive the epic exchange story.
