In a world increasingly fragmented by geopolitical tensions and protectionist policies, Sunday's meeting between World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala and Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng in Geneva sent a powerful message that China remains a steadfast champion of multilateralism and a rules-based global trade order. The WTO chief's full recognition of China's contributions underscores the international community's trust in China's role as a stabilizing force in global economic governance.

As one of the largest and most dynamic trading nations, China has consistently adhered to the core principles of the WTO — which are nondiscrimination, free trade and fair competition. Despite external challenges, including unilateral sanctions and attempts to decouple supply chains, China has actively participated in WTO reforms, supported the restoration of a fully functional dispute settlement mechanism and promoted initiatives, demonstrating its commitment to making global trade more inclusive and development-oriented.

By pushing for greater policy space for emerging economies and supporting capacity-building programs, China has helped ensure that the global trading system does not become a tool for perpetuating inequality but rather a platform for shared prosperity. Over the past decades, China itself has transitioned from a recipient of aid to a major contributor to global growth, accounting for about 30 percent of the world's economic expansion annually.

The country's total import and export value in April reached 3.84 trillion yuan ($534.03 billion), up 5.6 percent year-on-year. Exports stood at 2.27 trillion yuan, rising 9.3 percent, while imports totaled 1.57 trillion yuan, marking a 0.8 percent increase, according to the General Administration of Customs.

Moreover, China has been a key driver in regional and global trade agreements, including the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, the world's largest free trade bloc. By lowering tariffs, streamlining customs procedures and promoting digital trade, China is helping shape a more efficient and interconnected global economy.

However, the multilateral trading system still faces severe challenges. Some countries, driven by zero-sum thinking, have resorted to unilateral tariffs, export controls and discriminatory industrial policies, undermining the WTO's authority and disrupting global supply chains. Such actions not only harm global economic recovery but also erode trust in international cooperation.

China opposes these protectionist measures and has consistently called for dialogue and consensus-building within the WTO. During the meeting with the WTO chief, Vice-Premier He stressed that all parties should resolve differences and disputes through equal dialogue under the framework of the WTO.

The WTO's relevance depends on the collective commitment of its members to uphold its principles. China's proactive engagement in WTO reforms, coupled with its advocacy for a more balanced and equitable system, sets a constructive example for other nations.

As the WTO chief noted, WTO members should work together to defend an open and rules-based multilateral trading system, and strengthen dialogue and cooperation on international trade issues. China's vision of a community with a shared future for mankind aligns with this imperative, emphasizing mutual benefit over zero-sum competition. In the face of global challenges, only through solidarity and adherence to multilateral rules can nations ensure common development.

China's dialogue with the WTO reaffirms its role as a responsible major economy dedicated to an open, inclusive and fair global trading system. While protectionism and geopolitical maneuvering threaten to divide the world, China's actions demonstrate that true progress lies in collaboration, not isolation.

As the international community navigates an era of uncertainty, China's commitment to multilateralism offers a beacon of hope. Upholding the WTO's authority and advancing reforms that benefit all nations, particularly developing economies, should remain a shared priority. Only by working together can we build a global economy that is resilient, just and prosperous for all.
