State Grid Jiaxing boosts green power for high-performance computing

Recently, workers from the State Grid Jiaxing Power Supply Company visited the Range International Information Hub to learn about the progress of the enterprise's intelligent computing center project. The hub is located in Zhangjiang Yangtze River Delta Science and Technology City in Pinghu, a county-level city of Jiaxing in Zhejiang province. They assisted in predicting additional load and conducting capacity analysis, helping to achieve deep coordination and optimization of computing power and electricity management.

As the largest high-performance computing center in the Yangtze River Delta region, Range has already put into operation two intelligent computing center buildings, with a server scale of six 1024 groups (6,144 units). It plans to achieve a computing power of 97,200 petaflops (PFlops). The center has attracted global leaders in fields such as cloud computing, the Internet of Things, and e-commerce. From January to April this year, Range's electricity consumption grew by nearly 324 percent compared to the same period last year.

In response to the high energy consumption and significant fluctuations in electricity demand of intelligent computing centers, the State Grid Jiaxing Power Supply Company has leveraged the region's clean energy resources, such as offshore wind power and photovoltaic power. This has helped the enterprise achieve 48 percent of its electricity consumption from clean energy. The company also assisted in designing a power supply structure combining "dual-loop power supply, diesel generators, uninterruptible power supply and batteries" to ensure high-quality power supply and stable system operation.

As the scale of intelligent computing continues to grow, the State Grid Jiaxing Power Supply Company has formulated an implementation plan for "power-computing" energy-carbon cross-network coordination.?The plan aims to create a multi-layered system that includes "Green Power Aggregation Supply – Flexible Computing Adjustment – Carbon-Energy Cross-Network Coordination". By the end of 2025, the company expects the green power ratio to exceed 60 percent, with a goal to achieve 100 percent clean energy coverage. The company is also driving the construction of a water-based cooling system (Phases I, II, and III) and aggregating Range's massive adjustable resources into a virtual power plant. The total adjustment capacity is expected to reach 283,000 kilowatts.

This initiative will allow Range to train large models during low electricity consumption periods and increase computing power during times of abundant wind and solar energy. By transforming energy-intensive data centers into "grid regulators", the project supports these centers' participation in the power market, enhancing operational flexibility. It will help achieve greater data center computing power with less additional electricity and grid investment.
