Pianist's concert tour bridges artistic traditions between East and West

Chinese pianist and conductor Lin Wan launched a nine-day solo piano tour across five Chinese cities - Zhuhai, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Hangzhou and Foshan - starting late May. Rooted in Western classical repertoire and infused with Eastern aesthetics, the tour aims to foster cultural dialogue between East and West.

Curated around the theme of cultural exchange, the program combines performance with live commentary to make classical music more accessible to wider audiences.

Western masterpieces such as Claude Debussy's Estampes and Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition were reinterpreted by Lin through an Eastern lens. For instance, the impressionistic tone of Debussy's Gardens in the Rain resonates with the Chinese poetic concept of using intentional blank space to evoke imagination. The program also featured Frederic Chopin's Andante spianato and Grande Polonaise Brillante in E-flat major, Op 22, a work known for its lyrical beauty and technical brilliance, adding a romantic highlight to the concert.

Lin has spent years studying and performing abroad, including in the United Kingdom and the United States. Currently, she also serves as the deputy secretary-general of the piano art committee of Guangdong province.

The tour was presented in collaboration with Steinway & Sons Asia-Pacific. Looking ahead, Lin and her team plan to expand the "Silk Road Music Project" to Northwest China.
