China reiterates support for UNESCO after latest US withdrawal announcement

Beijing said on Wednesday that the United States' decision to withdraw from UNESCO is not conduct befitting a responsible major country, emphasizing that China remains steadfast in supporting the organization's work.

The US had previously announced that it will be pulling itself out of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, with the withdrawal set to take effect at the end of next year.

Addressing a daily news briefing, Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun noted that UNESCO and many countries have expressed regret over Washington's decision, which will be the third time the US has exited the organization while also chronically defaulting on its dues.

On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the United Nations, Guo said China called on all nations to reaffirm their commitment to multilateralism and take concrete actions to uphold the UN-centered international system, international rules based on international law, and the fundamental norms of international relations underpinned by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
