Study camp fuses AI with intangible cultural heritage

The inaugural "When AI Meets Intangible Cultural Heritage" student themed study camp was officially launched at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition and Convention Center on Sunday, in conjunction with the World Artificial Intelligence Conference 2025 (WAIC), attracting participation from students from nine provinces and cities nationwide.

Guided by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and hosted by the Shanghai Science and Technology Art Education Center, 32 students from 24 schools engaged in a four-day immersive study camp with respective intangible cultural heritage-themed projects.

The study camp is an in-depth extension of the When AI Meets Intangible Cultural Heritage event, which has attracted 7,631 students nationwide to participate since its launch during this year's Spring Festival, with 5,648 creative works collected.

During the study camp, students visited the Shanghai Public Art Coordination Innovation Center, technology enterprises, the Shanghai Museum, as well as the site of the WAIC, which began on Saturday in Shanghai, to interpret the When AI Meets Intangible Cultural Heritage theme exhibition held simultaneously.

At the exhibition, students' works integrating AI technology, such as shadow puppetry, button knots, paper-cutting, indigo dyeing, and Jinshan peasant paintings, vividly showcased the fusion of youthful creativity and cultural inheritance.

According to the organizer, the study camp aims to deeply integrate the inheritance of traditional Chinese culture with the cultivation of the spirit of scientific and technological innovation, building a practical stage for cultural inheritance and an innovative platform for scientific and technological exploration for teenagers.
