Fujian released the "2024 Fujian Province Marine Ecological Early Warning Monitoring Report" on July 31, showcasing the positive outcomes of its marine ecological protection and restoration efforts.

The report highlighted its achievements in disaster prevention, fisheries resources conservation and coastal wetlands preservation over the past year.

In the realm of marine ecology protection and restoration, Fujian reportedly made significant strides.

Through 15 central-supported projects from 2021 to 2024, the province has restored 27.52 square kilometers of coastal wetlands and 73 km of coastline.

Notable projects like the Sand Coast Revegetation of Binhai New City in Fuzhou and Restoring Mangroves to Reduce Coastal Risks in Xiatanwei in Xiamen were recognized as International Applications of Ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction in Coastal Areas in 2023.

In the area of marine ecological disaster prevention, Fujian established a robust grassroots monitoring team that effectively managed 16 instances of red tide in 2024, ensuring that seafood quality and public safety remained uncompromised.

Efforts to conserve fishery resources saw the release of 9.6 billion units of aquatic organisms in 2024. That was alongside a robust network for rescuing aquatic wildlife, which established that a total of 62 incidents involving the protection and rescue of aquatic wild animals were handled throughout the year.

Fujian's commitment to coastal wetland protection is said to be evident in the planting of 22.1 sq kilometers of new mangroves and the restoration of 11.56 sq m of existing mangroves between 2020 and 2024.

In terms of economic growth, Fujian's marine economy flourished in 2024, boasting a total marine GDP of 1.25 trillion yuan ($174 billion), with significant growth in various sectors. The province led the nation in per capita aquatic product consumption, exports, marine aquaculture production and the scale of its deep-sea aquaculture.
