State Grid Jiaxing deploys 3D system to protect power lines

To better protect power transmission lines against external damage, the State Grid Jiaxing Power Supply Company has installed 3D panoramic intelligent measurement systems on the 500-kilowatt Qiaoyou 5433 and Qiaoquan 5434 lines.

"When a potential hazard approaches a live conductor, the alarm system can issue timely and accurate alerts while displaying the real-time distance between the hazard and the conductor," said a company representative on July 25.

The newly deployed system leverages binocular stereo vision and AI image recognition technologies to identify risks such as mechanical intrusions or fire hazards in real time. It generates a 3D point cloud reconstruction of the transmission corridor, enabling sag calculation, early warning of tree and structural obstructions, and spatial positioning of threats.

Unlike traditional monitoring systems, this solution visualizes the exact distance between the conductor and any identified hazard within the alert image itself — significantly aiding personnel in threat assessment.

The system also allows for customizable alert thresholds, reducing low-risk alert image transmission by 60 percent. This streamlines the workload for both central monitoring staff and on-site maintenance crews.

State Grid Jiaxing plans to expand the use of this technology across key risk areas to enable early detection of external threats and precise distance monitoring. Future applications will include distance measurement at high-risk line crossings, as well as enhanced analysis of vegetation and fire risks.

This initiative is expected to further empower intelligent grid operations and accelerate the digital transformation of transmission inspection and maintenance.
