Peruvian ex-president receives second sentence of 13 years in prison

LIMA -- Former Peruvian President Alejandro Toledo was sentenced on Wednesday to a prison term for the second time, the country's judiciary said.

The Ninth Criminal Liquidating Chamber of the Court of Lima has sentenced the former president to 13 years and four months in prison for aggravated money laundering, the judiciary said on social media platform X.

This is the second conviction against the 79-year-old former president, who had received a prison term of 20 years and six months in October 2024 after being found guilty of aggravated collusion and money laundering for irregularity in the construction of the Interoceanic Highway linking Peru and Brazil.

Toledo is currently being detained in the Barbadillo prison in the Peruvian capital Lima, where former presidents Ollanta Humala and Pedro Castillo are also held.
