Chengdu New Energy Forum boosts investments in Sichuan

Secondly, it has abundant human resources. There are more than 30 research institutions based in Shuangliu, including the Institute of Optics and Electronics of CAS, as well as seven universities, most famously Sichuan University. This ranks Shuangliu as the number one among all western counties in terms of its human resources and scientific research potential.

Thirdly, the county boasts a highly efficient administrative environment, well regarded by both domestic and international enterprises for its ability to maintain a highly structured market and a credible management system.

One official in charge of the Southwest Airport Centralized Industry Zone said: "Shuangliu now has an unprecedented opportunity to establish a State-level new energy industrial base."

During the forum and the exhibition taking place in Chengdu, a number of renewable energy experts from home and abroad took the opportunity to discuss the huge potential of China's renewable energy industry.

Khalid Malik, the UN Resident Coordinator and the UNDP (United Nations Development Program) Resident Representative in China, said that the Chengdu New Energy Forum provided a great opportunity to showcase China's rapid development in this sector, especially its outstanding growth in the wind power and solar energy industries.

Malik said: "Chengdu is taking a lead in new energy development in China. In the future, the UNDP will expand its cooperation with Sichuan in terms of R&D in this sector."

Zhang Xiaofeng, manager of the US-based Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), said that during the current global financial downturn, China's promotion of new energy development was of crucial importance.

He said: "It is great for us to discover that the once relatively obscure Shuangliu county is rich in silicon resources, a great reason for PG&E to invest in the region."

Jiang Jiasi, a director of the Peking University Environment Fund, said that the current financial crisis provided a real opportunity for China to speed up the development of its new energy initiatives.

He told the conference: "Shuangliu county, as the key area for Sichuan's new energy development strategy, should seek to open minds and forge a wider range of international cooperation."

Li Junfeng, secretary-general of the China Renewable Energy Expert Committee, a group operating under the auspices of the China Association of Resource Comprehensive Utilization, said that the Chengdu New Energy International Forum was a vital event for the country's alternative energy strategy.

Li said: "The demand for energy keeps growing, but the massive exploitation and consumption of fossil energy is leading to a growing shortage of oil and coal.

"Reducing our industrial dependence on oil, coal and other fossil fuels and the development of alternative and clean renewable energy sources have become an inevitable reality for countries around the world.

"As China's key zone for the accelerated development of the polysilicon solar energy equipment manufacturing industry, Sichuan will play a major role in the future of the country's alternative energy program."
