Heilongjiang's farms turn to 'green'

A ban on commercial logging in Heilongjiang's Greater and Lesser Khingan Mountains will ease losses in water and soil, said officials. "Heilongjiang is endowed with good black soil, water and air, and is an ideal place for green food development," said Wang Xiankui, Party secretary of Heilongjiang.

A total of 4.67 hectares of the green food production was certified last year, and the government is now striving to build a system to trace products into a national model, said Wang.

"We should extend the farm product processing chain, increase the number of leading companies and help more farmers get into the agricultural industrialization," said Han Dongyan, Party secretary of Heilongjiang's Qiqihar.

Some of Heilongjiang's grain production counties are shifting into the green food industry.

A total of 55 food-related projects have settled into the Xingshan Industrial Park in Zhaozhou county over the past two years, said Wang Xingzhu, Party secretary of Zhaozhou.

"Annual sales can reach 27 billion yuan when all projects go into operation," said Wang.

"It's a great opportunity for Heilongjiang to adjust the overall structure (of the agricultural sector)," said Song Kui, an expert from the provincial technology and economy advisory committee.
