Quad-core processors handle Internet traffic with ease

The rapidly swelling Internet population has increased demand among both Internet content providers (ICP) and their users for higher speed Internet access. CDN (Content Delivery Network) technology allows users to access Internet content through the nearest available servers, helping decrease pressure on the source servers and relieve network traffic congestion, thus improving the responsiveness of websites.

Recently, Dnion Technology, a leading CDN service provider in China, deployed an array of high power efficiency devices including more than 100 servers from Sun Microsystems powered by AMD quad-core Opteron processors. The move helps upgrade its CDN platform, allowing its customers to optimize the network for improved website access and service quality.

Thanks to its superior CDN solutions, Dnion Technology has already forged solid partnerships with leading Internet portals, online media, and video streaming companies.

However, in anticipation of an explosive increase of website visits for its customers during this summer, Dnion Technology determined to fully upgrade its CDN network, further adding to the continuous optimization of its platforms. The upgrade is designed to maintain its high-level service capacity, while at the same time preparing for future business growth.

To upgrade its CDN platform, Dnion Technology used rigorous technical tests to evaluate products from all relevant vendors. The company finally adopted the high power efficiency equipment available, including over 100 Sun Fire X2200 M2 servers based on the AMD quad-core Opteron processors, to update its CDN platforms.

To date, Dnion Technology has deployed most of the quad-core Opteron-based Sun Fire X2200 M2 servers, achieving initial success in upgrading its CDN network. With the completion of the upgrade, Dnion Technology’s CDN network will be able to process 10% to 40% more data at each node. The overall acceleration capacity of its CDN network will increase by about 30%, and its total bandwidth across China will increase by nearly 40 Gbps.
