Beijing CBD expansion plan to be chosen this year

Seven possible plans to expand Beijing's Central Business District (CBD) area are being displayed in the city for public comment beginning today, and a decision on which one to implement is expected by the end of this year, the Beijing News reported.

The plans were designed by the China Academy of Urban Planning & Design, along with six other world renowned institutions. The new area will be three square kilometers large, and the city government has insisted the new buildings have a low carbon footprint, the first of its kind in the world.

It takes 10 years for the Beijing CBD to develop from a pure concept to a large local economic contributor and the program to expand it has been under way since earlier this year.
