Some experts consider that the exploration of art as an approach that Zhang has taken may be a realistic way for China to catch up with the world's leading luxury watchmakers.

According to Wang Mengjin, deputy head of watch collectors' society under the China Horologe Association, an industry body, the country has produced more than 80 percent of the world's total gross production of watches in recent years, but it has made less than 15 percent of the sales.

"Domestic companies have also made great strides, but it's undeniable that we are still unable to compete with Swiss watches in the short term," Wang says. "However, it will win us opportunities if we can enter some new spaces like porcelain dials.

"If more Chinese watchmakers are able to concentrate our rich culture into such small dials, using new scientific and artistic approaches, we will still be able to produce the world's top luxury products. No matter how many foreign designers borrow Chinese elements, the most genuine ones are always here."

That's what they will be trying to tell the world in Basel.
