Director Chen Kaige gathers enormous landscapes, banjo tunes, and prophetic lyrics into this biblical-style epic.

It depicts a blind old man wandering through the Gobi Desert playing the banjo with the hope that his music will restore his sight someday. When he was young, his master told him that if he plays the banjo until he breaks one thousand strings, he will be able to see again.

This dream inspires the old man to walk from village to village, playing his music for anyone who will listen.

Travelling with a blind boy as a servant and apprentice, the old man is called "Saint" by those who meet him. His music seems to have the magic to lighten up the lives of those who live in the harsh environments of the Gobi.

This happens despite him being haunted by his lack of sight, and frustration threatens to destroy him.
