Art Works from Pingxifu, a joint show featuring paintings by artists living in Pingxifu on the outskirts of Beijing, will reopen to the public at the Toady Art Gallery after being suspended for several weeks because of the SARS outbreak. Participating artists are all characterized as residents of Pingxifu, a northern area of Beijing that has become one of the capital's noted artist villages where the artists all live together. Exhibits include paintings using different materials on a wide spectrum of social topics and reflect the personal feelings of artists from universities and professional artists from other parts of China. As the first in a series of exhibitions focusing on various artists groups in Beijing, the exhibition stages works of artists according to the residential locations where they choose to live together. Different areas on the outskirts of Beijing are popular among many professional artists who favour such places for their tranquility and cheap rent. The way of life in these communities have influenced the personal styles of artists and led to the rise of a clear school of art defined by location.
