15 trapped miners in Xinjiang rescued
Two miners were confirmed dead in the coal mine flooding accident in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, while 7 still missing.
Bodies of 2 miners were found at 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. respectively on Monday, said Tian Guangxiong, an official with Xinjiang coal mine security supervision bureau. Another 7 miners were still missing, Tian said, and the possibility of their survival was small. The accident happened in the No. 2 Mine owned by a drilling company of Xinjiang Hami Coal Corporation at 8:50 a.m. Sunday when49 miners were working below ground. Twenty-five miners managed to escape, and another 15 were rescued at 3:35 a.m., Monday. Only one miner was carried above ground by a rescuer on the back, and the other 14 miners managed to walk up themselves. Some rescued miners hugged their families and cried.
The miners looked tired but seemed in good conditions. Ambulances waiting outside the coal mine rushed the miners to hospital for physical examinations.
The accident happened in the No. 2 Mine owned by a drilling company of Xinjiang Hami Coal Corporation at 8:50 a.m. Sunday when 49 miners were working below ground. Twenty-five miners managed to escape, but 24 were trapped.
Among the 24 trapped miners, 15 people miners were blocked in the tunnel. Rescuers acted promptly draining water and clearing up the tunnel, and providing fresh air, according to Xu Jianqun, secretary of the drilling company's Communist Party of China Committee.
Some officials of Xinjiang and Hami City joined in the rescue work soon after the accident.
