Coal mine explosion kills 34 in Shanxi

By press time, 34 miners have been reportedly killed in a coal mine blast Friday morning in Xixian county of Linfen City, north China's Shanxi province, and two others were still trapped underground.

There were 49 miners working underground when the explosion occurred around 7:40 a.m. at the Liangjiahe Coal Mine in Xixian county, and 13 miners were later rescued, said Gong Anku, director of the provincial coal mine work safety supervision bureau.

No more detailed information has been available so far, as the state-owned Liangjiahe Coal Mine was located in the outlying mountainous areas with poor telecommunication facilities, which posed a great difficulty for investigation.

Rescuers are working hard round the clock to search for the two trapped miners.

Zhang Baoshun, governor of Shanxi province, is now on the way the coal mine and government officials of Linfen city are busy directing the rescue effort at the site.
