Prosecutors face strict demeanor rules

The Supreme People's Procuratorate has released a series of strict disciplinary rules for prosecutors in a bid to clean up their behavior at work and in private.

A senior official with the SPP said the rules are designed to eliminate corruption and build a cleaner, more honest team of prosecutors.

Divided into three chapters and 118 items, the rules list the type of punishment to be delivered to those who break the law.

This includes disciplinary warnings and 81 forms of improper behavior that lead to demotion or expulsion.

Examples include prosecutors who physically punish criminal suspects during interrogation to be given a disciplinary warning, demoted or removed from their posts depending on the seriousness of their crime.

Also, prosecutors who conduct illegal body or residence searches will be dealt with according to the seriousness of their cases.

Prosecutors who delay interrogation or lose confidential files will be punished.

Punishment will also be given to prosecutors who carry guns and ammunition in public without permission and those who lend weapons to others.

The rules set out different forms of punishment for prosecutors who use public funds to travel, entertain and shop, and those who accept gifts.

Prosecutors who violate the birth-control law will be expelled from their jobs, as will those who gamble or provide shelter for gamblers.

Prosecutors who participate in street fights and scuffles will also be punished.

Prosecutors who have extramarital affairs will be expelled, demoted, or given a disciplinary warning.
