Gas pipeline blast kills three in Kazakhstan

An explosion on a pipeline in western Kazakhstan carrying gas from Central Asia to Russia triggered a fire that killed three people and injured three, officials said on Tuesday.

The cause of the blast on Monday was not immediately known.

The officials said it took about nine hours to put out the fire on the Soviet-era pipeline.

The three injured people were taken to hospital with burns.

Gas supplies via the pipeline were suspended immediately after the blast, authorities said. It was unclear on Tuesday if supplies had resumed.

Kazakhstan's state gas carrier KazTransGas declined to give further details.
