Six arrested for coal mine accident in NE China

Updated: 2005-05-07 20:05 Six people held accountable for a coal mine
flooding accident that killed 29 miners were arrested Thursday while victims'
families each received 200,000 yuan (about 24,100 US dollars) in compensations.
The detainees are Cao Huijie, owner of the Ji'an Coal Mine in Jiaohe of Jilin
Province, his assistant Cao Huizhong, production manager Feng Guobao, technology
manager Liu Jincheng and another two directors on duty Li Yunpeng and Sun
Xinyuan.
Local police alleged that Cao and his sidekicks had violated the country's
security production law by purposely hiding the water leakage information from
neighboring Tengda Coal Mine and thus procrastinating rescue work.
While water leakage caused by illegitimate exploitation of Ji' an miners on
April 22 developed into a flood and spilled into the shaft of Tengda two days
later, a total of 69 workers were trapped underground.
So far, only 39 were rescued, 29 dead and 1 missing. Families of the deceased
and missing received compensations from the owner of Ji'an Coal Mine and an
insurance company.Both mines were licensed and privately owned. The Tengda Coal
Mine has 200 miners and an annual production capacity of 60,000 tons of coal,
while the Ji'an Mine has 50 miners and an annual capacity of 15,000
tons.
