Ne-Yo原名Shaffer C. Smith，效仿《黑客帝國》影片里男主角的名字Neo給自己起了一個NE-YO的藝名，出生于美國阿肯色州一個音樂世家，自幼生活在一個單親家庭，被母親撫養長大。為了使Ne-Yo有更好的發展，母親帶著他移居拉斯維加斯。2004年，一直潛心創作的Ne-Yo一鳴驚人，他和馬里奧（Mario）合作創作的單曲《Let Me Love You》不僅曾連續九周壟斷Billboard Hot 100單曲榜，還以1億8千9百50萬次的收聽次數創紀錄的成為電臺單周收聽量最大的單曲。其中，由Ne-Yo創作的感人至深歌詞更是給人留下了很深的印象。在2006年首張專輯發行之前，Ne-Yo的歌聲還不為人所知，但作為一名出色的詞曲創作人，Ne-Yo這個名字已經響徹整個美國R&B音樂圈。從90年代末開始，Ne-Yo就開始為多位一線歌手創作歌曲，這其中包括了瑪麗·J·布里奇（Mary J.
