The Ballad ofChaohu Lake, composed of three different genres including hao-zi (work songs), shan-ge (mountain songs) and xiao-diao (ditty), is a traditional folk song of Anhui Province that is typical of impromptu.
According to Chaohu people making up songs is easy. With their superb wit and great sense of humor, Chaohu people can sing about work, sing about the seasons, sing about daily life, and their neighbors' laziness.
Through the efforts of local government, there have been more than 1,000 Chaohu Lake Ballads recorded, among which about 30 are used in music courses in middle schools nationwide.
However, because of a lack of young folk song singers, the Ballad of Chaohu Lake still need more attention and protection. In 2006, the Ballad of Chaohu Lake is applying for the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
