HK, Macao and Taiwan residents get new residency rights

From Sept 1, residents from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan who have lived on the Chinese mainland for longer than six months can apply for a new mainland residence permit, according to an announcement by the State Council Information Office earlier this month.

Liaoning province in Northeast China has set up 257 offices in the province to make it easier for eligible individuals to apply for the new permit.

The permit, which is shaped like a national ID card, can be read automatically at electronic terminal devices in places such as railway stations, airports and banks. It is expected to smooth the process of living, working and studying on the mainland.

Applicants with stable jobs and an address in China can apply at local departments with related materials, and they will receive a residence permit within 20 working days.

Those under the age of 16 may apply for the permit via their registered guardians.

The residence permit is valid for five years.
