Rare Siberian cranes appear at Huanzidong National Wetland Park

Huanzidong National Wetland Park in Faku county, Shenyang, Northeast China’s Liaoning province, is increasingly playing home to Siberian cranes, stopping over for food and rest on their annual migration, according to local reports on March 12.

An estimated 45 Siberian cranes, more than 100 swans and over 15,000 wild geese can now be seen at the wetlands.

The Siberian crane, also called the white crane, is an endangered species. Naturalists estimate that more than 3,000 white cranes remain in the world, over 2,000 of which –– around 70 percent of the total world population –– gather at Huanzidong National Wetland Park each year for 90-100 days.

Covering a wetlands area measuring 2,047 hectares, the park offers a protective habitat where the migratory birds can stop during their journey.

The park has improved its wetlands ecosystem, to be an ideal habitat for migratory birds.
