Rational patriotism needed

Japan's illegal purchase of China's Diaoyu Islands infuriates Chinese. Protests against Japan broke out in several Chinese cities these days.

A problem arising from the widespread anger is how to stay calm and rational while showing discontent and anger. Some people smashed and set fire to Japanese-brand cars casually or destroyed Japanese-funded businesses.

Some protests seemed to be on the edge of becoming riots. They have already infringed upon Chinese nationals' private properties and legal rights. If these irrational activities get out of control, the "patriots" will harm their own nation at large. This is what right-wing Japanese politicians hope to see.

Patriotic actions should not threaten the stability and development of China. All Chinese citizens can actually find their own ways to contribute to China's stability and development.

Japan stole the Diaoyu Islands after defeating the weak Qing Dynasty in a war more than 100 years ago. China is no longer the weak country it was then. History teaches us we should abolish the shortsighted "patriotic" violence and unite all nationals' power and passion in building our own country.

Similarly boycotting Japanese commodities will lead to a trade war between the two countries. Neither side would benefit from a trade war.
