Coronavirus variant first found in Nigeria discovered in Guangdong

Novel coronavirus variant B.1.525, which was first reported in Nigeria, was detected for the first time in Guangdong province on Friday.

The variant was found in two people coming from abroad.

The two were confirmed asymptomatic coronavirus carriers on February 21 and 22, respectively, and remained under medical observation, according to a statement issued by the Guangdong provincial center for disease control and prevention on Sunday.

The variant has spread to 26 countries. It is found to be more transmissible in related researches and may infect those who were infected by novel coronavirus before.

The variant was detected in the closed-loop monitoring system in Guangdong and presents extremely low risk of community transmission, according to the center.
