Returning Corinthians star Renato hails Chinese Super League experience

SAO PAULO - Brazilian midfielder Renato Augusto said Wednesday that his spell with Beijing Guoan has made him a more versatile player.

Renato left the Chinese Super League side last month to rejoin his former club Corinthians on a deal that runs until December 2023.

"I had to adapt to play in several positions in China, from central midfield to center-forward," the 33-year-old told a news conference in his official unveiling as a Corinthians player.

"We had three foreign players and we were all moved around to have different roles. I explained this to [Corinthians manager] Sylvinho and told him where I'd like to play most, where I feel most comfortable.

"I just want to do what's best for the group and help where I can," added the playmaker, who won three trophies during his first stint with the Sao Paulo outfit from 2013 to 2015.

Despite being unable to help Beijing Guoan end a top-flight title drought that dates back to 2009, Renato established himself as one of the Super League's most influential players during his five years in China's capital.

He made 152 appearances across all competitions for the Imperial Guards, scoring 40 goals and providing 45 assists. His only piece of silverware was the 2018 Chinese FA Cup, though the club finished a close second to Guangzhou Evergrande in the 2019 Super League title race.

Now Renato's focus is on guiding Corinthians, traditionally one of Brazil's strongest clubs, out of an extended malaise.

Having failed to win a major title since 2017, the Timao are currently 12th in the Brazilian Serie A standings with just four wins from 15 matches.

"I'm just thinking about playing as well as I can and helping Corinthians win trophies," said the former Bayer Leverkusen player, who has been capped 32 times for his country.

When asked about the possibility of a recall to Brazil's national team, Renato said: "The Selecao has always been a reward for playing well for your club. That's my focus."

Renato is expected to return to the pitch for Corinthians in their home Serie A clash against Ceara on Sunday. Enditem
