Pakistan largest combined cycle power plant puts into operation

On April 21st local time, an unveiling ceremony was held for and at the Gddu Combined Cycle Thermal Power Plant, a project designed and constructed by CEEC in Pakistan. Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif attended the ceremony.

In his address, Sharif highly appreciated the Chinese government's support to and CEEC's hard work for the project. "The project is completed seven months ahead of schedule, which allows the Pakistani government to save 58.6 billion rupees (about 586 million US dollars)," he said. "The Pakistani people are proud of Pakistan-China friendship and the two countries will have more cooperation in the energy field."

Located in Sindh Province in Southwestern Pakistan and funded by CPGCL, the second largest power generation company of PEPCO, the project is the first large-scale turnkey combined cycle power project that China has ever undertaken overseas, with construction work beginning in August 2010. Consisting of two heavy-duty gas turbines, two China-made waste heat boilers, one steam turbine, one generator house and some ancillary facilities, the power plant boasts a total installed capacity of 747 MW, the highest of its kind in Pakistan.

For years the South Asian country has been troubled with a severe power shortage which is sometimes as huge as 5,000 MW in the summer season. The newly built Guddu Power Plant will effectively mitigate the severity of this problem, promote local economic and social development, and accelerate the formation of the "China-Pakistan Economic Corridor".
